Well, I've never done a "tagged"-style journal before, but
gave me the opportunity, and since it's such a fixture of dA and revolves around something awesome, I figured I'd try it out!
Foreword:
The object is to pick one's favorite Pokemon from each generation, only one. Gosh, so difficult--so difficult, I think I'll at least mention my runner-ups to give them some cred if they deserve it. Furthermore, associate legendaries with an entirely separate part of my brain--because I never use them in game, I can't equate them with other Pokemon. A lot are cool, and some I love, but I can't put any on the list. That said, let's get cracking.
KantoHonorable Mentions: Charizard,
Poliwhirl,
Gyarados,
Bulbasaur, Staryu, Rhydon, Electabuzz, Scyther--okay there's a lot of Pokemon in Kanto I adore.
The hardest choice by far, I cannot stress how much I love the Pokemon from the first generation. I fiercely love Sugimori's simplicity in design and design philosophy much more in his earlier works. I feel as though his old designs split into two halves--the basic simples where Pokemon lack many details, and the honest simples where his Pokemon are much more animalistic than contemporary Pokemon.
Gengar hits the first one on the head in a beautiful way. I love Pokemon that just look like generic monsters, but could also be animals in the real world. Gengar fits everything I want a Pokemon to be, and beyond. Sorry Charizard, in the words of Professor Oak, "You were close!"
JohtoHonorable Mentions: Mantine,
Scizor,
Donphan
Up until about two years ago, Scizor was my go-to favorite Johto Pokemon. But I always felt guilty for an obscure reason, but after accepting it was because I liked Heracross better, I felt much more relieved. I can't exactly put to words why I love Heracross. It's the perfect combination of bulky and frail, sweet and fierce, cute and strange--and look at that cinnamon roll face. Oh, I guess that did put it to words.
HoennHonorable Mentions: A big ol'
N/ADon't get me wrong, there are some perfectly fine Hoenn Pokemon. But none that even remotely come close. Sceptile has been my favorite Pokemon of all since I first fell in love with it when I was nine. I could write an essay on the different ways this Pokemon inspires me, but hey, I'll leave that for the imagination. Everyone has their special Pokemon bond.
SinnohHonorable Mentions: Gliscor,
Dusknoir,
DrapionFunnily, Magmortar was long ago the Pokemon I preferred, as I love clowns, jesters, and duck like things. But Electivire transcended that--I love its build, its smirk, its raw power and ability. Plus watching this behemoth of a gorilla/mandrill/oni battle against Ash's Infernape in the Sinnoh League certainly helped. Have you seen it use its tails in action? This thing is cruel, it's like the Joker with that smile. Oh, I guess Gengar works too. Or even...
Unova
Honorable Mentions: Krookodile,
Samurott,
Eelektross,
Scrafty,
Golurk
I'm a sucker for Egypt and Ghosts. This thing felt so ludicrous, I couldn't help but fall in love with it. Cooky, crazy, enigmatic, monstrous--the right balance of intimidating and silly. A lot of Pokemon from Gen V were really supposed to emulate the roles of Gen I Pokemon, and while it isn't anywhere near seamless, it has a similarity to Gengar I can't help but adore.
KalosHonorable Mentions: Aegislash,
Greninja,
GoomyWhile I'm certainly very acceptant of a lot of the Kalos Pokemon, I must say it's tied with Sinnoh for Pokemon I love the least. In general they're all perfectly fine, but their peaks are pretty low. However, one underrated Pokemon I think is so radical is Barbaracle. Just listen to that name. Woof, chills. For such a silly design concept, it executes it to astonishing fright. Though it may not be the best battler, compared to the potential of the other honorable mentions, it reigns supreme in Kalos for sure, even if it flies under the radar.
Well, there we have it! Though if I were to pick my favorite six Pokemon of all, we'd have quite another quandary on our hands. (I'd probably pick all Gen 1 and 2 with the exception of Sceptile)
